My name is Kira Anderson and I am a Public Health student at Brigham Young University. I first discovered my interest in public health when I spent the summer of 2008 volunteering in Uganda. There, in a little town called Lugazi, I worked with an agency called HELP International, which develops and implements sustainable community development projects. Many of the projects in which I participated were health-related; these helped me realize my passion for public health. That passion and my desire to serve people were mitigating factors in my choice of major and, eventually, of profession; after graduating, I plan to work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a health educator and advocate. Currently, I am doing my best to learn about Health Issues in Africa so that I can better address them in my profession. If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or additional comments about the blog, please contact me at kira_a@live.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kira,
I was wondering, are there plants indigenous to Africa that help fight in parasite control, malaria, and birth control? Is abstinence taught or believed? I know in some countries, indigenous plants are used as medicine for prevention. Have they lost these teaches?
